Isabelle Fuhrman, Amy Forsyth and Dilone will headline Lauren Hadaway’s debut feature, “The Novice,” Variety has learned exclusively.

Ryan Hawkins of Picture Movers, Steven Sims of H2L Media, Kari Hollend, and Zack Zucker are producing. Al Engemann of Picture Movers, Charlotte Ubben and Michael Tennant of RBF Productions, and Billy Hines and Christopher Hines of H2L Media are executive producing. Production will start in mid-October.

The film tells the story of a college freshman who joins her university’s cutthroat rowing team and undertakes an obsessive journey to make the top varsity boat.

Fuhrman’s credits include “Orphan,” “Down a Dark Hall” and “After Earth.” Forsyth most recently appeared in Amazon’s “Beautiful Boy” and previously starred in NBC’s “Rise” and and Hulu’s “The Path.”

Hadaway, a 2018 Outfest Screenwriting Fellow, is repped by Bellevue Productions. Fuhrman is repped by UTA and attorney Cheryl Snow. Forsyth is repped by Gersh and David Dean Management. Dilone is repped by Framework.

TIFF review: Akilla’s Escape puts a grounded spin on the gangland thriller

Charles Officer's first dramatic feature in 12 years offers a great performance and a striking creative choice.

Officer’s first feature since 2008’s Nurse. Fighter. Boy. stars Saul Williams as a mid-level drug runner trying to reclaim some stolen merchandise after a robbery goes sideways – and maybe save a kid named Sheppard (Thamela Mpumlwana) from going down the same path that’s swallowed his own future.

Moving between present-day Toronto and 1995 New York, when Akilla was inducted into gangster life by his father (Ronnie Rowe, Jr.), Officer and co-writer Wendy Motion Brathwaite craft a tense, grounded spin on the gangland thriller, taking familiar genre characters and giving them histories, desires and motivations. A couple of secondary heavies don’t get that sort of consideration, but this isn’t their movie: it’s about Akilla and Sheppard, and what the older man will do to help the younger one.

It’s clear Akilla sees Sheppard as a younger version of himself – it’d be hard not to, really – but Williams plays that empathy as an irritant, something that keeps getting in the way of his mission to save both their lives. The film’s masterstroke is in its casting: Officer gives Williams his first screen lead since 1998’s Slam, and the actor is as powerful and present as he was two decades ago. He gives Akilla a confidence and unspoken authority that comes with knowing a world inside and out, and an exasperation with people who insist on making the wrong move when they don’t have to. Williams also composed the film’s score with Massive Attack’s 3D; the music seems to be keeping pace with Akilla’s heart rate.

Officer does something else with Akilla’s Escape that I’m hesitant to discuss, but when you see it you’ll hopefully be as stunned and impressed as I was. It’s not a plot twist, but rather a creative decision that pays off absolutely brilliantly over the course of the movie, giving flesh to its central metaphor and making the story play on at least two different levels above and beyond what happens in the narrative.

Wildbrain and King Bert Productions (Sick Note, The Midnight Gang, The Queen and I) are pleased to announce that the new live-action series, Malory Towers, has been greenlit by CBBC, the BBC's channel for children aged 6-12, and DHX Television's Family Channel. Malory Towers is based on the iconic book series of the same name by Enid Blyton and follows 12-year-old Darrell Rivers as she leaves home for the first time to attend an all-girls' boarding school. Principal photography on Malory Towers begins this month in Toronto, Canada, and will shift to the UK in September 2019. The series is expected to premiere on CBBC and Family Channel in 2020.

DHX Media and BBC Children’s Productions will be co-producing another 10 episodes of original kids’ live action series Creeped Out.

CBBC in the UK and Family Channel in Canada have ordered Season 2 of the spooky series that combines sci-fi, horror, adventure, suspense, fantasy and mystery.

Production will begin this summer, with the first five episodes to be shot in Toronto in mid-August, followed by five episodes to be filmed in North West England.

Season 1, which premiered on CBBC last October and debuts on Family Channel this fall, has also been picked up by Netflix worldwide (excluding Canada and the UK) for streaming this October.

“When done right, spooky anthologies like this have universal appeal, and we know that for season two, the talented writing and production teams in the UK and Canada have some truly hair-raising tales to share with fans around the world,” said Josh Scherba, president, DHX Media.

Each story in the drama anthology is introduced by “The Curious,” a mysterious, masked story collector who appears at the beginning and end of each episode.

Gavin Crawford's Wild West is a Canadian television special, which aired on CBC Television in July 2013. Wild West stars Gavin Crawford as six distinct characters, each representing a different aspect of the society of the Canadian province of Alberta, in a mockumentary format. Altar Boy Gang is a slightly twisted, ironic coming of age story about growing up Catholic. It has always been Diane Gallagher's dream that her son, Sean, be an altar boy. She has been hinting and cajoling him for some time now but Sean has resisted. After an incident that makes her worry about her son burning in Hell for eternity, she puts her foot down and tells Sean he's becoming an altar boy. Little does she know that she's opened up a door to a life of crime.

When they aren't performing their churchly duties, the altar boys at the parish are a gang of hell-raising delinquents. After quietly serving the host or gently swinging incense during Sunday Mass, the Altar Boy Gang is out smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, breaking windows and selling drugs. The Altar Boy Gang follows the characters who work at and attend a Catholic church in an urban Canadian city. A priest starts to question his faith. A parish mother expects everyone around her to be as holy as the pope. Altar boys make drug drops in the confessional booth.

At an awkward stage of life, four boys are bound together by being altar boys. It's a unique club plus the perfect cover for raising hell. Will their life of crime finally catch up with them? Or will a confession and ten Hail Mary's absolve them of all their adolescent sins?
